Online Resources
  • Archives and Manuscripts: Includes letters, diaries, and account books; town, business, and civic organization records. Collection Guides for Archives and Manuscripts are available online.
  • Cemetery Records: 24,085 entries from 164 cemeteries indexed online; files with photographs of tombstones.
  • Census Records: Federal census returns available on microfilm include Loudoun County 1810-1930, all Virginia counties 1810-1930, and select Maryland counties.  Access to electronic census records is also available onsite through the library’s online subscriptions.
  • Deeds and Wills: Indexes available as well as microfilm of actual documents for most years.
  • Genealogies and Family Files: Books and collections of genealogies and other information emphasizing Loudoun families.
  • Historic House Files: Lewis/Edwards files from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources containing information about historic sites and buildings in Loudoun County and Town of Leesburg Planning and Zoning Department survey files of Leesburg’s old and historic districts.
  • Maps: Historical and current maps of Loudoun County, its towns, and nearby counties.
  • Military Collection: Information about the colonial period, American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, and World Wars I and II.
  • Newspapers: Loudoun County newspapers on microfilm and in hard copy dating from 1800. Index database currently containing 94,815 entries for births, marriages, and deaths.
  • Online Subscriptions: Websites such as AncestryLibrary, FamilySearch.org Genealogy.com, and HeritageQuest are available free on-site.
  • Oral Histories: From 1970’s to the present including many sponsored by the Black History Committee documenting African American experiences in Loudoun County.
  • Printed Collections: Books and periodicals are accessible through Loudoun County Public Library’s catalog, Horizon.
  • Visual Collections: Include photographic collections of Russell Gregg (1930’s and 1940’s) and Winslow Williams (1940’s and 1950’s), art work and multi-media.
  • Tax Rolls for Loudoun: Tithables 1758-1786, Personal Property 1782- 1850, and Land Tax Rolls 1782-1870 available on microfilm.
  • Vertical Files:
    • Biographical Files: Articles, clippings, and photographs about Loudoun County residents.
    • Church Files: Brief histories of local congregations; some include information about specific members.
    • General: Articles, clippings, and photographs emphasizing local history.
  • Vital Records: Births 1853-1896, Deaths 1853-1896, and Marriages 1757-1935 available on microfilm.
